OUR LEGAL TAKE

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided at the apartment complex and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on the property?
  • How was the suspect able to gain access on to the property?
  • What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, monitored surveillance cameras, and visible security patrols, were in place to deter crime and protect Mr. Porter at the time of the shooting?

Generally, property owners are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm. Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner failed to provide adequate security to protect those on its premises, the Mr. Porter’s family may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims for their loss.

Based upon its prior successful experience in handling security negligence claims on behalf of victims and their families, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed. Given the complexities of pursuing a negligent security case, it is imperative that Mr. Porter’s family retain an experienced attorney who can ensure the preservation of any and all evidence that may support such a claim.

A shooting at the River Glen apartment complex reportedly left one person injured Tuesday evening, October 11, 2016.

According to WRDW News 12, the shooting occurred at the “River Glen apartment complex in Augusta.” One person was apparently “shot in the leg.” The victim’s current condition has not been released.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the apartment complex and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain entry to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, bright lighting, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place and working at the time of the shooting?
  • Was the apartment complex aware of any prior criminal activity on or near the property?  If so, were additional security precautions implemented by the property owner or management to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management company failed to provide adequate security, the victim may elect to seek justice and pursue a legal claim for his injuries.

According to WJBF News, the shooting occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. at “the Salem Arms apartment complex off of Windsor Spring Road.” The victim was transported to the hospital and listed in “serious but stable condition,” per WFXG News reports.

Police have not yet identified a suspect or motive in the shooting. The Salem Arms property has a reported history of gun-violence, with WRDW.com reporting on a fatal shooting at the complex in October 2009.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. Given the reported history of gun-related activity on property, The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the apartment complex and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • Following any prior incidents of violence on or near property, were any additional security precautions implemented by the apartment complex owner or management company to deter crime?
