Atlanta, GA – One person is dead and two were injured after a shooting outside an Atlanta, GA nightclub early Wednesday morning, January 1, 2025.

As reported by AtlantaPD.org, “[o]n January 1, 2025, at approximately 3:15 a.m., Atlanta Police Zone 3 Officers responded to reports of people shot at [a bar and nightclub] located at 1919 Metropolitan Pkwy SW. Upon arriving on the scene, officers located a 48-year-old male and a 41-year-old male who both sustained gunshot wounds.  Both males were transported to a local hospital in stable condition by EMS.  A third victim, a 28-year-old male was privately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.”

11Alive.com is reporting, “Kirey Thompson, a Clark Atlanta University graduate and former football player, died after being taken to the hospital by his family.”
This is apparently not the first time the nightclub has been the site of violence.  11Alive.com is reporting “Atlanta Police responded to gunfire outside the venue in April 2024 after a group that was told to leave fired at the building. No one was injured there. In May 2021, a 15-year-old was charged with killing a 29-year-old man at the same location. 11Alive has also covered several other deadly shootings at the bar from 2016 until now. Records show police responded to at least 26 incidents at the bar over the past year, ranging from aggravated assault to narcotics violations.”
The investigation is ongoing.

FORMER CLIENT: I had lawyers calling me, and friends telling me who I should hire…I trusted in The Murray Law Firm and I’m glad I did.

Nightclub patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises they are visiting. The level of security provided at the property is of significance, and is a relevant consideration when analyzing whether this shooting may have been prevented.  The following questions are also important in assessing whether this incident may have been avoided:

  • Have prior incidents of violence been reported on or near the property?
  • Was the property owner or manager aware of any suspicious activity prior to the shooting?
  • Were any security personnel at the property?
  • Were security measures added after any prior incidents?
  • What protocol was in place to deter crime and protect the victims at the time of the shooting?
  • Have authorities been to the property on prior occasions?

Property owners are generally required to protect against foreseeable harm to anyone and everyone legally while on the premises.  Should the investigation into this incident reveal facts that establish that the property owner or management lacked adequate security to protect its visitors, the family of Kirey Thompson may seek justice and elect to pursue legal claims and substantial compensation for their loss.
