Local News

20-year-old Reginald Bracey was reportedly shot at the Airway Motel Wednesday morning, June 22, 2016. The AJC reports, “It began early Wednesday when [Mr. Bracey] was shot outside the Airway Motel, near I-20.” A “friend” apparently attempted to transport Mr. Bracey to the hospital, however, “before the pair could make it to Piedmont [hospital], the car ran out of gas and stall[ed] in the middle of I-75.” A multi-vehicle accident apparently ensued. Per the AJC story, Mr. Bracey “was taken by ambulance to Grady, where he later died, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.”

Per Fox5Atlanta.com, “Fulton County police are leading the investigation into the shooting. Investigators said they believe they know who the gunman is and they are actively searching for him.”

Our Legal Take

Motel guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the motel and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain access to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place to protect guests at the time of the shooting?
  • Following any prior incidents of violence on property, were any additional security precautions implemented by the motel owner or management company to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the motel owner or management failed to provide adequate security, the family of Reginald Bracey may elect to seek justice and pursue legal claims for his wrongful death.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) warns, gas station theft is an “emerging crime trend….The unique setting allows thieves to catch their victims by complete surprise — when they are pumping gas or paying their tab inside the station.” These thefts frequently turn to violence. Sadly, as the NCPC notes, these incidents “can be easily prevented if the appropriate precautions are taken.”

Although gas station security is ultimately the responsibility of the owner and management, the NCPC encourages patrons to take the following measures to protect themselves:
