Negligent Security? Our Legal Take: Gainesville Man Shot, Killed Outside Former Nightclub

Did negligent security contribute to this fatal shooting? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victim’s family may have a legal avenue for justice and a claim for compensation.

Local News

30-year-old Terry Jerome Maddox was reportedly shot and killed outside a Gainesville private event space Friday night, September 9, 2016.

According to The Gainesville Times, the shooting occurred “just before 11 p.m. at the 900 block of Athens Street.” Police told media, “the shooting took place outside a building that once housed a club called Sparkles and that the building is now used for private events.”

Our Legal Take

Patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises of the establishment they are visiting. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those outside the former nightclub and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • What security measures, such as weapons screenings, bright lighting, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place to protect patrons at the time of the shooting?
  • Was the business owner aware of any prior criminal activity on or near property? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the property owner or management to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the business owner failed to provide adequate security, the family of Terry Jerome Maddox may elect to seek justice and pursue legal claims for his wrongful death.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
