UPDATE: Did a Fatal Security Lapse Contribute to the Death of Clinton Patterson Robbery?

Local News

34-year-old Clinton Tyrell Patterson was reportedly shot during a robbery outside his North Grove apartment home Wednesday night, December 21, 2016.

According to the Athens Banner-Herald, police believe Mr. Patterson was the victim of a “robbery” outside of the “North Grove Apartments on Old Hull Road.” Family members apparently told media Mr. Patterson was carrying “as much as $1,000 on him when he was shot because he recently got paid at his job and was planning to go Christmas shopping for his five young children.”

Tragically, the young father succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on New Year’s Day.

The AJC reports, one suspect has since been arrested in connection with the shooting and a warrant has been issued for a second suspect.

Our Legal Take

Apartment complex residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the property and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunmen gain entry to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, surveillance cameras, bright lighting, and security patrols, were in place and working at the time of the shooting?
  •  Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the apartment complex owner or management to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management company failed to provide adequate security, the family of Mr. Patterson may elect to pursue legal claims for his wrongful death.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
