Local News

63-year-old Marie Cochran was reportedly shot and injured during a robbery outside the Savannah Mall Friday, June 10, 2016.

According to WSAV News, police have arrested a teenager “suspected of a robbery and shooting in Savannah Mall’s parking lot on June 10, that left Marie Cochran, 63, with serious injuries.” Ms. Cochran was apparently “shot when she fought back during a robbery.”

A 16-year-old suspect allegedly turned himself in to SCMPD on Saturday evening.

Our Legal Take

Shopping mall and parking lot patrons have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the mall and whether this shooting may have been prevented.

  • What parking lot security measures, such as surveillance cameras, call boxes, and security patrols, were in place to protect mall patrons at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the mall owner or management to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the mall owner or management failed to provide adequate security, Ms. Cochran may elect to seek justice and pursue a legal claim for her injuries.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
