Local News

A shooting at the Sandy Springs apartment complex in Macon reportedly claimed the life of 34-year-old Tyrell Jordan Tuesday, June 21, 2016.

According to 13 News WMAZ, the shooting occurred “just before 3 a.m. at [the] Sandy Spring Apartments, 3044 Bloomfield Drive.” Mr. Jordan’s girlfriend apparently told investigators that “she left the apartment to go to the store and when she returned, she discovered Jordan had been shot twice, once in the shoulder and once in the torso….”

“Around 200 people gathered” for a Sunday evening vigil to remember Mr. Jordan, 13 News reports, demonstrating “just how much [he] meant to the people he loved.”

The Sandy Springs Apartments complex was apparently the subject of another shooting investigation in May 2015.  A May 7, 2015 report indicates that a “shooting happened…at the Sandy Springs Apartments located at 3044 Bloomfield Drive.”

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the apartment complex and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain access to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, fencing, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place to protect residents and guests at the time of the shooting?
  • Have there been prior incidents of violence on or near property? If so, were any additional security precautions implemented by the apartment complex owner or management company to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management company failed to provide adequate security, the family of Tyrell Jordan may elect to seek justice and pursue legal claims for his wrongful death.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
