Did negligent security contribute to the death of this young woman? Read Our Legal Take to find out if the victim’s family may have a claim for compensation.

Local News

26-year-old Juwauna Washington was reportedly shot and killed inside her Landings at Oak Hill apartment Friday morning, April 15, 2016.

According to WALB News, “the incident happened around 3:45 a.m. at the Landings at Oak Hill apartment complex on the 4300 block of Flat Shoals Road in Union City.” Ms. Washington apparently suffered a gunshot wound to her right side when a “bullet came in from a window.”

Police have not yet identified a suspect or motive in the shooting, presumably leaving residents concerned for their safety. Per AJC reports, another fatal shooting occurred at the same complex in October 2015.

Our Legal Take

Apartment residents and guests have a right to feel safe and secure while on the premises. Given the reported history of gun-related activity on property, The Murray Law Firm questions the level of security provided to those at the apartment complex and whether this tragedy may have been prevented.

  • How did the gunman gain access to the property? What security measures, such as gated-entry, surveillance cameras, and security patrols, were in place to protect residents at the time of the shooting?
  • Following any prior incidents of violence on property, were any additional security precautions implemented by the apartment complex owner or management company to deter crime?

By law, property owners in Georgia are required to protect all those legally on the premises from any foreseeable harm.  Should the facts of this matter reveal that the apartment complex owner or management company failed to provide adequate security, the family of Juwauna Washington may elect to seek justice and pursue legal claims for her wrongful death.

Based upon its long, extensive, and successful experience in handling negligent security cases against property owners in the State of Georgia, The Murray Law Firm suggests that photographs and a thorough, unbiased inspection of the property will need to be performed immediately, before any evidence may be repaired, damaged or destroyed.
